Alternative Investment Funds (AIF)
Access Beyond Traditional Markets
Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) are privately pooled investment vehicles that collect funds from sophisticated investors to invest in asset classes beyond traditional equity and debt. Governed by SEBI (AIF) Regulations, 2012, they offer access to private equity, venture capital, real estate, infrastructure, and complex hedge fund strategies.
Unlike Mutual Funds, AIFs have a minimum investment threshold of ₹1 Crore and involve a lock-in period (usually 3 to 5 years), making them highly illiquid. However, they offer the potential for significantly higher, non-correlated returns and allow investors to participate in the growth of unlisted companies.
Evaluate AIF Opportunities
₹1 Crore Minimum
As per SEBI regulations, the minimum investment for any AIF scheme is ₹1 Crore. This restricts participation to Ultra-HNIs and Institutional investors who can bear higher risks.
Illiquid & Long-Term
AIFs are closed-ended with a lock-in period ranging from 3 to 7 years. Your capital is tied up, but this allows the fund manager to execute long-term strategies without redemption pressure.
Non-Correlated Alpha
By investing in private equity, venture capital, or complex hedging strategies, AIFs aim to provide returns that are not correlated to the daily fluctuations of the stock market.
The 3 Categories of AIFs
SEBI categorizes AIFs based on their investment strategy and the impact they have on the economy.
| Category | Focus Area | Typical Strategies | Leverage Allowed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category I | Positive spillover on the economy. | Venture Capital, SME Funds, Infrastructure, Impact Investing. | No (Except for operational needs) |
| Category II | No specific incentives or concessions. | Private Equity, Debt Funds, Real Estate Funds. | No (Except for operational needs) |
| Category III | Complex strategies with high risk. | Hedge Funds, PIPE Funds, Distressed Assets. | Yes (Up to 2x for equity) |
